COVID-19 Pandemic event visa (Subclass 408)

The Australian government has good news for all Temporary visa holders with work rights. Temporary visa holders with work rights can apply for the COVID-19 Pandemic Event (Subclass 408) visa without a Visa Application Charge for a period of 6 or 12 months if they work in any sector of the Australian economy. The government has taken this initiative to recover the Covid-19 impacted economy. Unemployment in Australia is at its record lowest, and the business across all sectors require skilled workers to fill the vital positions. So, to retain migrant workers and strengthen the economy, the government has removed the limitations on sector eligibility of the Covid-19 Pandemic Visa. Before this new visa enhancement, only the people working in agriculture, food processing, health care, aged care, disability care, child care, and tourism and hospitality were eligible for the Covid-19 Pandemic Visa.

The new arrangements will only be available for Pandemic Event visa applications made on or after 21 February 2022 by:

  • Temporary visa holders who were in Australia before 21 February 2022; as well as
  • Temporary visa holders who arrive in Australia after 21 February 2022 and have work rights or a job offer from  Commonwealth-funded aged care service at the time of application.

To be eligible to apply for this visa, applicants must:

  • Be in Australia
  • Have 28 days or less remaining of the current visa or the last substantive temporary visa expired less than 28 days ago
  • Be able to support themselves and family members while living in Australia
